Something Old, Something New

I'm the bad guy in our family.  Seriously.  We had a man named Kenny come to our house and try to sell us a $2,000 water filter.  I only agreed to let him come to get the free vacation package (which was a joke). My husband felt so bad for the guy, he was ready to sign the contract even though he didn't want it.  However, I wasn't about to say yes. I firmly told him no after a three hour demonstration.  Needless to say, Kenny wasn't happy.

I"m heartless when it comes to salespeople.  "Ma'am, would you like to take a second to fill out this surv..."
"NO!"

"Hi.  We're from a youth challenge program, and we're trying to earn money for college."
"NOT INTERESTED!"

"Hello Mizz.  Vould you like to zee zeez zmoke-lezz zigarettez?"
"Umm... NO!"

Ok, maybe I don't yell, but I don't beat around the bush. No matter how heartless I am though, there's always one thing I'm a sucker for.... Christmas decorations!

We made an impromptu trip to Lowe's last night for some more spray paint ( I am always buying spray paint), and as my husband was drooling over the tools, I took the boys to the garden area to look at all the Christmas stuff.  Who knew a dancing snowman singing "Holly Jolly Christmas" could still make me laugh?

I love it all!  I know it's October, but I say bring on the cinnamon candles, nativity scenes, lit trees, and Charlie Brown!

Sadly, this post isn't about Christmas decorations at all.  But, it is about the spray paint from Lowe's.
I have had this big mirror my mother-in-law gave me, and I love the size of it.  However, I wasn't crazy about the drab wood color.
As you can see, my piano is also a wood color, along with this vintage rocking chair that belonged to my grandmother-in-law when she was a little girl.  I needed a pop of color and knew spray paint would be the easiest and fastest way to achieve it.

First, I wiped down the mirror.  It's also smart to sand it, but I'm too lazy.

Then, I taped it off along the edges with painter's tape.

After I taped the edges, I taped on some paper to completely cover the glass.  I had this in my garage, but trash bags or newspapers would work too.

Make sure you do multiple light coats of the spray paint.  If you spray it too thick, it'll run.

This is my first coat.
This is about 6-7 coats later.

I didn't like how blue it was so I decided to distress it.  I bought some sandpaper, but if you don't have any on hand, I have actually used a little metal dish scrubber before.

Take off the tape and paper, and voila! Now there's a nice pop of color in this corner.

I know I'm in charge of the "style" part so keeping with the theme of taking something old and making it into something new, I did another tutorial.

I had this t-shirt that was a little stretched out, and it had a stain on it from baby spit-up.

Starting at the bottom, I cut across the shirt to get long circles.

I had one break so I just tied it back together.

I cut strips out all the way up to the armpits of the shirt.  Then, I stretched them all so they wrapped up a bit.  I hung it around my neck like a long necklace, but I decided to double it up to make it look like this.

Check out that 90's hair.

I also had those cute little flowers leftover from the shirt.  I thought I'd try them out on my grey sweater.  So I attached them with a simple needle and thread.  If I get tired of them, I can just use my seam ripper to take them off.  I think they're pretty cute though!

I hope these are helpful.  Now I'm linking up to these great blogs.

  1. I really enjoyed that I had no idea where this was going as I got sucked into the water filter guy story.

  2. Hahaha! I know Marian. I realized after I wrote the whole beginning, it had absolutely nothing to do with what I was posting. I figured it could be like a Simpson's episode and just be completely random.
