Bread for Low-carb-ers {My Favorite Things}

One of the things I miss the most in a low-carb lifestyle is obviously bread. And crackers, and chips, and pizza, and .... you get the point :-) However, if you are going low-carb like me, I am about to change your life.

Susan got this book called Trim Healthy Mama that is really fabulous and I highly recommend. But the gem of all gems so far that Susan found is their recommendation of Joseph's flax bread products. They sell a "lavash" flatbread, a normal-sized pita, and mini pitas about the size of a hamburger bun, all at my local Walmart. The best part is, one serving is only FOUR carbs. And these things are seriously delicious! You can make:

  • sandwich wraps (better than "real" sandwiches in my opinion; I use half a lavash for this -- plenty! A 4-carb sandwich!!!)
  • pizza (the round pitas make perfect crusts for personal-sized pizzas)
  • chips or crackers (brush oil, sprinkle kosher salt, cut, and microwave/bake)
  • anything with tortillas -- tacos, breakfast burritos, cream cheese rollups, etc.
  • and probably tons more!
Now I can have cheese and crackers, tacos, pizza, sandwiches, chips and salsa or guac, and so much other stuff that I missed! Honestly, I feel like these things have made low-carb a long-term possibility for me. And they don't taste like weird diet food; they really are yummy. My kids love them, and my husband actually prefers them! At my store, they are about the same price as a package of tortillas. So I'm really glad Susan found them!!!
